Deer Velvet: For thousands of years, Asian countries have considered Deer Velvet to be their most valuable health tonic. It is noted for reducing the aging process, stimulating the immune system and promoting good all round bodily health, including the improvement of sexual activity.
Deer antlers are composed of bone and posses the unique feature of regeneration. Each year the previous hard dead antler drops off and a new antler grows. During growth the antler is composed of cartilage, bone, a wide variety of nutritional components and has an excellent blood supply. The growing antler is covered with short fuzzy hair which resembles velvet, hence the name deer velvet. Deer velvet products are made from the cartilage, bone and nutritional components, rather than the hair itself, before they calcify into hard bone.
The compounds chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate, known to aid in the treatment of arthritis and joint pain, are found in deer velvet. It is also used as a calcium and phosphorus supplement.
